TRCs October Rope Fest Pays out Over $170,000 at
Apache Gold Casino October 10-12.
Just one more qualifier remained before the 2008 World
Series of Team Roping in Las Vegas and Apache Gold Casino turned out to be the
perfect place to host it. A really nice pen of steers and crisp autumn air
greeted the ropers at Apache Gold’s state of the art Pavilion. By the end of the
weekend ropers were also greeted by Gist champion buckles and over $170,000.00
in crisp hard cash. Everyone agreed that it was a real nice way to spend a real
pleasant Fall weekend.
A #14 roping kicked off the weekend early Friday with
some steers that were ready to roll. Guero Martinez and Tyler Getzwiller tangled
up 3 of the swift steers faster than anyone in the field at 24.52 seconds and
pocketed over $2,500 in the process. Following the #14 some pros put the steers
through the paces for four go’s. Shane Sample and Tyler Getzwiller put four
picture perfect runs together in 28.47 seconds and pulled a $2,150 check out of
the arena. The World Series #13 Qualifier matched 154 teams and paid seven
qualifying places to Decembers Finale in Las Vegas. 1st in the
average offered $11,460 and was a great target to shoot for. Jerry Mcphaul of
Pietown NM and Kyle Roundy of Grants NM put 4 steers through the paces in 32.55
seconds to hit the target and were awarded Gist buckles to boot. The final
roping on Friday was the popular #12 which offered $3,620 for the fastest on
three. Cassie Walker and Sam Hambrick accepted the offer with 23.29 seconds
worth of dallying and facing.
Saturday was all about the World Series Qualifiers
with the #11 followed by the #10. The #11 started with some unseasonal rain but
quickly warmed up into a great contest of 177 teams gunning for eight chances at
World Series Finale qualification. This roping can be summed up in two words,
Dennis Lines. Dennis was high call AND second high call back. Braden Hawkins saw
a little trouble with his short-go steer that momentarily crouched on the ground
and then sprang back up and Dennis roped him snappy as could be in the
situation. Armon Pearson then turned Dennis a perfect steer and under all the
pressure Dennis doubled him as pretty as could be. The net effect was that
Dennis and Armon both of Pima AZ collected Gist buckles and $12,750 and Dennis
collected an additional $8K with Braden. That’s a perfect day for a heeler to
double 8 steers out of 8. A total of 201 teams entered the #10 World Series
qualifier to shoot for nine qualifications at the WSTR finale. Richard Hamilton
and Bill Fancher both of Kingman AZ averaged a little over 10 seconds per steer
to best the field with 40.88 seconds. For their efforts they were awarded Gist
buckles and $12,550. Congratulations to all who placed in the WSTR qualifiers
and will test their skills at the South Point Casino later this year at the
Finales in Las Vegas!
The #10 $15K cash roping topped off the weekend
Sunday. Trent Gillespie and Jake Blackrock scored the average victory to take
home $5,000 and Gist buckles. Steven Gaona bested the field in points and
pocketed $5,000 all to himself. Congratulations to the weekend competitors.
The Roping Company would like to thank the best staff
in the west for fantastic 1st Annual Oktober Fest Event. Thanks also
to Apache Gold Casino for the best roping facility in the west. Most especially
The Roping Company would like to thank the continued interest of team ropers AND
their supporting families in The Roping Company’s events! We’ll leave the wraps
on for you and see you at the next one!
