Double-J Saddlery #10 Saddle Recipients: Omar Alvarez, Edgardo Alvarez, Rene Ortiz, Sid Savage, Ken Wilson, Megan Wolf, Rudy Clark Jr.. Photo courtesy of R&R Photography. Double-J Saddlery Truck Events a Hit at Empty Acres, March 31 and April 1 produced by TRC Two trucks awarded in two days of quality roping were the successful ingredients for Double-J Saddlery Events March 31st and April 1st at Empty Acres in Buckeye Arizona produced by The Roping Company. The weather was very agreeable and the phrase was true as ever: “two trucks are better than one”! At least that was the consensus of enthusiastic ropers vying for two new Dodge Turbo Cummins Diesel trucks. You know, it stands to reason that Double-J would sponsor a roping that awarded DOUBLE TRUCKS. Encouragingly, the #10 and #12 events offered a variety of ropers at different skill levels to compete and drive home the Turbo-Cummins Diesels. Ropers, if you haven’t yet been a competitor or spectator at Empty Acres, drop by and see Mike & Tammi Sully and their friendly staff or visit them online at www.emptyacres.com. With the “land-grab” going on in the “valley of the sun” Arizona is fortunate to have such a fine privately owned (read no city council intervention). Also located on site are a fantastic tack/feed store (Forever-D) and a state of the art veterinarian clinic (River Ridge). The action started on Saturday with the Double-J Saddlery #10 Truck Event where ropers competed for a 2007 Dodge Quad Cab 3500 SLT Dually Diesel grand prize. When the day was done 16 year old roper Frankie Martinez handed the truck keys over to his parents for safe keeping and made immediate plans to obtain his drivers license. Frankie was assisted nicely in his point totals by teaming with Rene Varga for 2nd in the Ave with 26.56/3 and header Edgardo Esuer with a 29.58/3 which was good enough for 5th in the Ave. Riding a horse has been Frankie’s priority up to this point until but with the keys to a new Dodge Turbo-Cummings Truck burning a hole in his pocket you can bet that Frankie will balance his interests and beat a path to the DMV to obtain his overdue drivers license…if only to haul himself to upcoming ropings. Congratulations to Frankie on the biggest win of his young roping career. Saddle winners for Saturdays #10 Living Large started with Omar Alvarez capturing the #5 saddle. Omar was assisted in the award by Scooter Ochoa and Mike Enervold with times of 30.45/3 and 31.90/3 for 8th and 9th respectfully in the average. #4 saddle recipient Edgardo Esquer collected his prize by winning 4th with truck winner Martinez and 10th in the Ave with Ron Mills at 32.08/3. Rene Ortiz knocked down 12th and 14th in the Ave by roping with Rudy Chon and Willis McLennan on times of 32.46/3 and 34.51/3 respectively to secure the #3 saddle. Rudy Clark Jr. switched ends from his heading norm to heel for Dale Cureton and lock down 3rd in the Ave and adequate points for the youth saddle. Senior Sid Savage heeled for Alejandro Gandara to place 7th in the Ave on 32.08/3 and the Senior saddle. Super Senior Ken Wilson teamed with Sergio Baca and with three runs in 30.16 seconds qualified for 6th in the average and a saddle for Ken. Finally, Megan Wolf teamed with Dale Cureton for 17th in the Ave at 35.25/3 to win the Women’s saddle. Congratulations to all of the #10 Living Large Saddle recipients for a terrific day of roping! The #12 Double-J Saddlery Event Sunday April 1st roping drew a terrific bunch of salty ropers anywhere from across the Southwest to compete head to head for a 2007 Dodge Quad Cab 3500 SLT Dually Diesel grand prize. In a “down to the wire” affair heeler Brye Sayer squeaked by header Chancie Miller by the thinnest of margins…1 point. In fact Chancie and Brye teamed together to earn 3rd in the Ave with a swift 24.21/3. From there Brye teamed with Todd Schaefer to rope three in 25.41 seconds. Chancie trailed with her partner Ken Matheson by only 24 hundredths to be 25.75/3…and 8th in the Ave…the difference between a truck and a saddle. In the end Chancie claimed the #5 (and below) saddle and Craig Branham claimed the #6 (and above) saddle. Craig received his points by teaming with Elmer Fernandez for 23.92/3 and claiming 2nd in the Ave and also 11th in the Ave with Miguel Arvizu with 26.14/3. Congratulations to Brye on his fantastic showing at Empty Acres and driving away in the Double-J Saddlery truck. Congratulations also to Brye and Craig for earning the extra-fancy Double-J saddles. Side note: since it was April 1st it seemed only appropriate to torture the truck winner for perverse satisfaction. So, after his Brye’s truck award was announced he was given a few minutes to bask in his win but then was abruptly informed that the points were added wrong and that he did not win the truck after all…”APRIL FOOLS!”. If you know Brye then you know he was a good sport about the gag. The Roping Company would like to thank Mike Sully and the staff of the new Empty Acres for providing Arizona’s most complete team roping destination. Thanks to title sponsor Double-J saddlery for making the best roping saddles anywhere…be sure to check out their website. Also, kudos to Cactus Ropes for producing a fantastic selection of ropes…find your favorite one and you will end up at the pay window…it’s almost that simple. Most especially The Roping Company would like to thank the continued interest of team ropers AND their supporting families in The Roping Company’s events! Ropers be sure to mark your Calendars for TRC’s Truck Fever at Apache Gold June 9-10…and as always Memorial Weekend at Pinetop Lakes. We’ll leave the wraps on and see you there!
